A poster where you don't really know what is going on and very conventional which would suit our film opening. There is only one character on the front, showing this film is about this guy with the Bank Job wrote in bold writeing. The title wants the audience to know what the film is about, which makes them curious to how they do it or what happens to him. The picture for the film attracts the audience in a number of ways and makes you want to watch the film.

Film poster

The Italian job poster doesnt best describe our film 'The Accountent' but i have used it because it is a crime caper and the poster does look quite plain but this is for a reason. You can clearly see that this film is a crime caper with an ensamble cast as it has a lot of characters on the poster, you can also see who are the leaders and who arn't as the two at the front are big and bold and stand out as for a few at the back who are a little hidden. The big title 'the Italian Job' tells the aduience that there is going to be a job taking place and its going to be a good one.

the power of three is very effective on the poster 'Get in, Get out, Get even' this shows that something exciting happens in the film and makes the viewer really want to go and watch the film.

shot sequence

This is a shot sequence i created. i have used
still shot images from our final cut film 'The
Accountant'. All these extra shots and final bits of editing really made the film into seem like a real film.
The feedback was:
Positive:
- The shot of when drink pouring in the glass
- A stylish film, some great shots and very exciting
- Good sounds used
- Titles worked well with the film
Negative:
- The intro seemed a bit long
- The music over the titles was a bit fast

Overall as a group we were very pleased with our film and as were the others who had seen it. Regions that we thought were fine, but actually needed attention to them. There were parts we did leave out in the rough cut like our titles which we had just not on final cut express. The things we need to adapt on were:

-Put some titles in.
-It would be good if it had a dimb soundtrack dureing the film.
-The film opening is too long.
-Some of the voiceovers of our actor speaking were too hard to hear.
-Would be more effective with more close ups.

Things that were told were good:

-Camera work was good, like good match ona ction shots.
-Production logo was very good.
-liked the gun shot, thought the sound and the reducton of the speed was excellant dureing that shot.
-Was easy to know what the genre of the film was and what the film was about.

The comments are very useful, they came in to a lot of hand for us so now we can work on our crime caper opening.
We do agree that it is too long but when the titles are in this will look very good and affective, so we may get rid of a few shots that are not needed, on the road when the car is moving along, those shots go on for too long and can be edited.
The titles we do understand that we need to put these in and this has already been done. We have actually got a few close ups just not as many as some of the audience wanted but we believe that too many close ups would ruin the film, in the opening sequence you want to establish a lot so you cannot establish massive amounts when a close up shot is made. Also the same with the voicerover it is better with the voice not being too clear, then it gives the audience a question, what does this man do?

Feedback on Final Cut:

Our final piece had all the bad comments from our rough cut edited, this makeing ther every little negative comments for our final cut which is good.

-A stylish opening sequence, stylish in which i mean a good variation of good camera shots and a good soundtrack when the titles come in.
-Liked all the voiceover/background sound.

The negative comment we did have:

-The soundtrack was too quick for your crime caper film.

Our views on our whole final cut was that we thought it was a really good opening sequence to a crime, it met all the conventions of a media film and we used various camer angles and lighting effects to suit the mood. Our film is very clear in the sequence unlike some films which only become clear during half way through.
<img width='1' height='1' It really rounds out the climax to the film ending with suspence and tension we like to create a similar feeling at the start of our film.

feed back from group

When showing our rough cut, we received some positive and negative areas of our film opening. As it was a rough cut we did not manage to finish the film opening off, so we were missing the titles, the name of the film and a few extra shots we have not included. Some of the feedback we received was:
Negative feedback:
- The overall film opening was too long.
- When the actor was pouring a drink, that carried on for too long and his back was to the camera.
- Some didn't understand the voice over.
- The film opening didn't seem a film with no titles.
Positive feedback:
- That everyone loved the production logo. Thought it was well done.
- The editing of the camera shots was good.
- Sounds used well, E.G dogs barking and gun shot.

Overall as a group we were pleased with the feedback but however some feedback was not so useful. It was great to hear everyone's views on our film opening, to see what we needed to change and edit on quickly. As we got the feedback from the group only three days before the deadline, we had to really act quickly and make a few changes to our film. We managed to film some extra shots when the actor was pouring his drink, this now has made that scene more interesting and not seem so dull and long. We have cut some shots that were unnecessary. This has made the film a little shorter.
Overall the group were pleased with our rough cut as well as ourselves. Adding in the titles and extra shots will really finish this film opening off and make it into a great crime caper opening.

Feedback

Overall, we received useful and constructive feedback from the group, after viewing our rough cut. Areas that we knew we had to improve were noted by others and also aspects that we didn't notice needed changing but, now are aware of those areas. The things we needed to improve/ other suggestions were...

Some sound needed to be pick up on, such as wind picked of by camera

It was to long, to many shots of car being driven

One shot of 'Frank' pouring drink when on for far to long, and became boring

They didn't know what was going on and was lost with the plot

Areas that were liked by others.

Was moody, as an effect of lighting

Was understood that character was involved in organised crime

Car sequence, character getting into car was sharply edited

Interesting use of effects

Liked production logo

These comments came in very useful and helped to develop our opening. We are planning to change the length of some shots, we agree some are too long, and some are unnecessary. We also will adjust the sound changing the volume at parts and silencing the wind. However some of the feedback wasn't as useful. Many openings of films open with a sequence that is slightly confusing or unclear, leading the audience into the narrative. We don't feel we need to make i any more clearer in terms of what is happening. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='By william wade'/>
Another analyse of a film opening, the Bank job

Analysis of The Bank Job

The bank Job is very much so a crime caper with an ensemble cast, as there are many protagonists within the film. A bunch of criminals who all play the part in a major bank robbery. The Bank Job is inspired by an extraordinary true event - a daring robbery that took place in the 70's, with a bank haul valued higher than the 'Great train robbery'. Jason Statham plays a character called Terry and he is the main man of the criminal gang. Jason Statham plays the role of a good confident leader an sets up a great bank robbery.

I am going to analyze the Bank job and talk about the micro areas which are: editing,Camera, mise en scene, special effects and sound.

The opening sequence doesn't really establish that there is going to be a bank robbery, you have to watch further in too establish this. the beginning also does not establish the ensemble cast but when going you start to meet a number of characters whoa re all working on the same job.

The film kicks things off with the song 'T-Rex get it on'. This makes the start of the film seem happy and fun but the song is deceiving as when there are two people having a sex scene there is someone taking pictures of two mysterious people having sex. These pictures then come up as being a major event of the film at these pictures create a huge chaos. when the man is taking the pictures, over the music is the sound of each picture being taken, this is to establish to the audience that the man is taking more than one photo. After the ex scene then goes on to a car shop. as this film is based in the 1970's the car shop is old fashioned selling old vintage cars. The music is then overpowered by the sound of a drill. The drill turning to show that someone is working on something, in this case someone is cheating and showing that the mileage on cars is low so they will sell better. This establishes to the audience that this car dealership is bad and they do everything for money.

There were a mix of camera shots within the opening sequence, varying from long shots to pan shots. The camera shots really work and in this case work well to establish things within the opening sequence. E.G the mid shot of the car dealership, just establishes to the audience that it is a car dealership by showing off the cars and the name of the car dealership.

The lighting in this intro is bright and a cloudy as it is in the day time,

Analysis for homework on The Italian Job

<meta equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;

The synopsis of the Italian Job, it is a robbery that contains a lot of gold and most importantly how they do the job, which is with the mini coopers. There is ensemble cast in The Italian Job and this film will influence with the good and the bad as main characters. Our opening sequence for our crime caper as we are going to have an ensemble cast will have good and bad main characters this is why I chose to analysis The Italian job. The synopsis in depth is about a perfectly executed robbery at the beginning where all of the characters such as Mark Whalberg and Edward Norton are established, and the bank robbery all goes to plan with out any mistakes taking millions pounds worth of gold. On the way back to a safe house they come across a truck on a bridge, the people in the truck get out with weapons and a traitor is amongst the good people. Who then steals all the gold, and get away. Through out the film the good people are looking for revenge on the traitor as he killed the leader of the good group. To conclude the film they get all the money with a struggle and great plan whilst leaving the traitor in a lot of danger and you do not know what happens to him. The opening sequence to this film is of very detailed instructions and maps down the Italian Riviera of what to do, this gives the audience watching a question, what is being planned in this case? The film then opens with the daughter and father on the phone to each other as they are on other sides of the world; the daughter is confused on what he is doing. The father then meets up with his other members of his team and starts discussing financial details which shows there talking about a robbery of some sought.

One of the main micro elements in this opening sequence which most of the audience should pick up on is the variation and timings of the camera shots. The cameras used in the opening sequence for The Italian Job is very good, there is a wide variety of shots, from close ups, to establishing shots. They are all held for the perfect amount of time. In a lot of crime caper films it takes a while to know where the person is until an establishing shot is done, In the Italian job a fantastic establishing shot is done where he mentions he is in Venice. A few good camera shots at an opening of a film can really set out that it will be a great film. A tilting shot when Mark Whalberg walks toward the camera, it shows the reflection of Whalberg in the water, then gradually the camera tilts up to show himself.

The mise en scene used is very important in any film and it is shown off in The Italian Job, costumes were a main hit in the opening sequence, they were very casual, unlike the film Goodfellas where they have the stereotypical costumes which is normal suit. When I say casual I mean clothing that is correct for the weather, they were wearing Jackets, coats, scarves and gloves. They were people that looked like they had money to spend on valuables; they were wearing smart black shoes in the rain, not boots or thicker shoes. The choice in costumes was very good; it made the public not think anything of these men just usual. The rendevoe point was very dissimilar, where all the public were also so none of them would look dodgy to the public. You could tell it was a tourist distraction as there were people with the cameras, with a huge building which was nicely lit up.

The lighting used throughout the opening sequence is different; In America where the girl is in bed, it is as if the mood sets her scene, she is happy as you can tell from her blues and her light colours but as soon as she finds out her Father is on a mission the mood changes, you then see the weather it looks rather dusk and dull because she is anxious. The lighting effects do not play the biggest part in the opening sequence.

To conclude my point, The Italian Job uses a lot of micro and macro elements I will be using in my crime caper opening sequence. I really liked the way camera shots, especially the tilting shot worked; this can definitely be an advantage to us and can be used in our film. The lighting in the opening sequence was very bright and you could see all the characters well, as we are shooting our film in the dark we will need to make use of the lights in the area, The Italian Job has given us notification on to do this. For costumes we are going to need to be, casual and smart at the same time, so warm big coats but smart shoes very similar to the Italian Job.

 <div Tim Roth
It then comes up with the name of the film which of course is Reservoir dogs.
10. casting Ronnie Yeskel, C.S.A
11. music supervisor Karyn Rachtman
12.
A brief description of the film is about a bunch of men who put together a bank robbery, as the film is a crime caper with an ensemble cast pretty much all the characters within the film are all protagonists, Some characters play a bit more of a role than others but everyone within the team works together and plays a main role. The film is also a bit comic as some of the tasks the team do to set up the robbery go a bit wrong and this makes the film a bit funny as they say some sly funny comments to engage the audience.

I found it quite hard to find the intro of the film so I had to use the trailer; this still has a few micro and macro elements within to support the conventions of a crime caper. The five micro elements,

Camera

Grphics and Special effects

Mise en scene

Sound

Editing

All these make Oceans 13 trailer maintain the conventions but also cause a bit of humor and enjoyment to the audience.

The first micro element I am going to mention is camera; there is a variety of different camera shots used within Oceans 13. In the trailer it is hard to detect different camera shots but some are obvious. The first obvious camera shot is when you see the top of all the high rising hotels and casinos in Las Vegas, this camera shot is a pan shot from high above, the panning of the camera around the city where its set helps to distinguish the location in which the elaborate crime will inevitably take place.this also sets the scene and tells the audience where the film is being set. There are mixes of close, mid and long shots used in the Oceans 13 trailer and here are a few examples. Near the end of the trailer there is a great close up of a man face, this is to establish he anger going through this man and makes the audience concentrate on noting but him and his facial expressions. A great example of a mid shot is when three men are on the roof and when someone is talking it goes onto each different actor and when it does this it is a mid shot, this is to establish who the people are and where they are as in a mid shot it also shows a bit of the back ground so it’s to show the audience where they are and in this case they are on a roof. “What you guna do, throw me off the roof”. A good example of a long shot is when the little man has jumped over an elevator and the elevator is shooting upwards towards the camera. This is also a clever effect making the elevator seem like its going straight towards the camera and shooting out of the screen.

There were a few of the camera shots mentioned but when watching the whole film there is a mix of other shots such as: track shot, crane shot the hand held ECT. My next micro element i am going to mention is the sound trough out the trailer.

The sound involved in the trailer is a bit different to any music any person would listen too. This music could only work with this kind of film (Crime caper with an ensemble cast). The sound throughout the whole trailer is a bit jazzy and fun. The sound is all done by musical instruments such as: bongo drums are to be very effective and also the saxophone ECT, together these make a great sound track for the trailer. The sound works with the film and when someone is talking the sound goes quite and sometimes the sound even goes off if the speech is funny or just to establish the characters within the film. Then when something exciting shows the music goes a bit loud. The sound has to be right in this case and it really makes the trailer seem fun and also makes the characters within the film seem clever. Another clever effect with the sound is the narrator who is planning the mission is talking when the camera is capturing many people play poker all around the casino, quick shots on and off different tables whilst talking shows that you know they are planning to do something to that casino.

The sound within the film can really create the atmosphere of a fun and cool film. The next micro element I am going to analyze is mese en scene.

Mise en scene plays an important part in revealing the genre of the trailer. As this film is set in Las Vegas you know that in Las Vegas everything is bright and rarely any moment in this trailer there is a dark dull spot. The lighting is always bright and this sets the films mood of being a fun film and something the audience can enjoy. There are a few moments in the trailer when the lighting is a bit dull and one example is when a load of men are standing around a hospital bed with the room lit up by one bright light. This makes the room seem private and lonely. The costumes involved are all which are expected of con men. They are all smart, but they put on the right outfit for the right occasion. E.G when showing the men sitting down doing things it shows them with shirts hanging out and not that smart, but when in the casino there is a quick close up of a smart watch and then zooms out and along with that smart watch the man is also wearing a smart suit. To play the part of a wealthy man, wearing a smart suit or tuxedo really makes you seem like one. Within a trailer it is hard to find out what props are used because it doesn’t really show many props, but the part when they have a card machine and all the cards pop out shows a bit of humor and in a crime caper with an ensemble cast there is always a bit of humor. This attracts the audience and makes them get more connected with the film.

Another micro element of the trailer is editing, and within this trailer there are a few great examples of it.

One of the first things the audience will see when watching this are the parallel editing, this is a very effective of way of showing two/three things at once and is very effective. A great way of using the parallel editing is when showing two things at once and having a voice over to tell what’s going on. Another editing element is 180 degree rule. This happens a couple of times in the trailer and I’m sure a lot of times in the actual movie, this is a very effective shot and it shows the audience who’s talking to whom. The 180 degree rule can be done as an over shoulder shot so you can see the back of someone and the front of another or you can do it out of the eye sight of someone. Either way they are both effective and work as well as each other.

The special effects used within the trailer where hard to distinguish but when seen are quite effective within the trailer. One special effect used is having a stund double. There is one part in the trailer where a man jumps over an elvator when it shoots upwards. This was a stunt man doing this as it was a dangerous tunt for any famos actor/actress to do. The graphics in this trailer are very effective as they wrok alongside the music and the plot of the film. The graphics are when the words pop up on the screen with a different colored background. This works well with the sound as when they pop up a laod bit of music comes up and a sentence comes up on the screen and all the words when put together come up with a sentence and in this case is: If you cross-one ocean-you face- them all. Revenge-is a funny thing-but what are the odds-of getting even. These allw ork with the plt and the sound aswell. This is very effective in a trailer because it attracts the audience and gets their attention.

To conclude I have analysed each micro area of this trailer. I found it quite hard to analyse the trailer as it wasn’t a film intro, but in some ways it s easier as there is a lot of special effects and graphics used in most trailers. By looking at this trailer you can clearly see that this trailer/film is a crime caper with an ensamble cast.

Sexy Beast

The are many aspects of this clip that are heavily influential to our sequence. Before you see the characters, you hear them talking. This voice over provides the audience with some suspense or an element of surprise when sound is matched to a picture. Voice over’s soon become a common occurrence through out ‘Reservoir Dog’ and other Quentin Trantino films.

When the film opens with its first few shots the audience is met with a group of men sitting in a café talking. The audience’s immediate attention would have been drawn to the costume and mise on scene, within the scene. This would have given them their first insight into the film.

The collaboration of mise en scene and costume, produced a very unbalanced scene in some respects, compared to the usual, stereotypical, gang/crime meeting scenes in other films. The large group were sitting in a very average café, not too run down, the sort of place you would image a range of people would go to eat. We got this impression from, as it was clean, busy and well lit. The group around the tables were all dressed in smart attire (shirt, tie, blazer etc), all in black. This clever choice of costume I felt, quickly put a dark edge on the scene, being given the impression that these men are well paid, choose not to associate themselves together in more upmarket places, maybe because of the way they earn their money? Even though they could afford to eat there. Further more, the all black suits, provide this image of organised crime, suggesting an under current of dodgy goings on.

Contributing further, briefly mentioned earlier, the lighting used, is very high key. The café is lit like any café would be, there is no hidden goings on in or out of the light that the audience can’t catch. The lighting contributes to this scene, tilting the scenes unbalanced nature. A well-lit scene/ café suggesting there is nothing hidden or sinister going on, however there is a table of robbers and criminal sitting at the table. I find this aspect of the scene really interesting and a good component that could be used in our opening sequence.

The camera shots and movements also strongly drive the opening sequence. With a scene set around a table, the camera was placed on a track on moved around the table, capturing characters speaking and other character reactions. With the camera constantly moving the scene becomes more hectic and busy. Often the camera when moving would move behind someone and the image would go black, leaving the audience with sound only. Again that common occurrence in Trantino’s films, that I mentioned earlier, making the film more stylised. These un-fluent camera movements could be a reflection on what happens later in the film. Not everything flowing so smoothly and being so clean cut, and even being left in the dark at times.

In addition to this, the scene allows the audience to get a brief insight into complex and unique character around the table. We get this insight through the convocations being had. The realist script, opens with a the group talking about the meaning of a song, and then quickly moves on to a more deeper and possibly more intellectual conversation about women works the minimum wage and whether or not to tip. I also liked the idea that even though they are criminals, they have certain morals and respect for women works, taking into consideration the class and employment issues concerning America. Characters as complex and this are often not found in most crime capers. The script is a key and strong tool used by Tarentino, in ‘Reservoir Dogs’.

feedback from group

To start we went around the group and every group told there idea of a film opening to the class. When it came round to our group we told the class our idea for a crime caper with an ensemble cast, we got some great feedback from many members of other groups and we have used some of their comments to make our film opening even better.
As our idea is rather complex it was hard to explain to the group, so a lot of people were asking questions about how we will do some scenes, such as the shooting scene through the car. But we do not need to film this we can do it by sound and with no picture. As our last opening sequence had not the best lighting we need to make sure we have a light atmosphere so we can use a bigger variety of camera shots and angles.

Film Plot

The main character in our sequence is a successful, high up, crime boss. He lives in a good house, has nice cars and is driven. His luxurious life style is also reflected in the clothes in he wears, the furniture and way his home is decorated. Because of the attention to mise en scene, from our group this expensive and high class life style our lead character lives, will be clear to the audience.

Our film opens with a male character waking up, late at night and getting picked up, by his driver. It being late at night would insinuate that he is involved in some sort of crime. The first few shot of him would show him getting ready waking up and preparing himself, this would also be an opportunity to show this luxurious life style.
The following shots would be him in the car with his driver driving to an unknown destination. The car he would be picked up in would be expensive, again in bedding that idea of a successful man that climbed his way to the top living a life of crime.
Then the car would come to traffic lights and stop, at this point very quickly with no build up, a hooded man would come to the window and shoot the driver and character.

Our group feels this would be a intresting opening because of the shock eliments. A lead character, successul in crime, expected to take controle in the plot is killed of in the opening two minutes of the film. We feel the shocking factor would be and intresting opening for a crime caper.

out law (an example of a crime craper with an example cast)

Outlaw is a crime caper with an ensemble cast. Outlaw is a great example of this as it is a group of men who all play as a protagonist. There is a little bit of comedy and some mistakes happen during the film which can be a bit funny.
I could not find the intro of this film so i used a sequence where there was a bit of humor and also it showed all of the main characters involved working together. when watching the scene you can clearly see that all the characters have different characteristics, some are a little shy, some are more realistic, E.G when the man says he will kill someone by punching them the black man who has a lot of commonsense says you will then serve a 23 year sentence in prison. The thing they all have in common is that they are all scared and and fear many people. This throughout the film changes and they all become more confident and more powerful as a group.

Oceans 11

A film that is clever and funny. It is a crime caper movie with an ensemble cast, the team of 11 hustle a rich man who owns a casino. Like Italian job they hustle a group to get money. The timing of the shots are held with the correct camera angles for a long time, where George Clooneys character is established there is a mid shot of his back and his front. Dress sense is all smart and distinctive in a posh gang way.
We are using the Oceans 11 look in our opening crime caper sequence, the way the characters dress such as Brad Pitt and George Clooney is very smart and non distinctive.
